land. Car park on Alvanley road. Follow the footpath at
the end of Hill Road South to the top of the hill. |
| Description
|
Helsby hillfort
has natural steep slopes on the west and north sides and
there are two earth and stone ramparts across the gently
sloping south side. The outer bank does not survive well.
Most of east part of the site is now under grass. The
interior of the hillfort has also suffered from footpath
erosion. Hillforts
are defensive settlements, created using a combination
of earthworks and landscape features such as hill tops
and cliff edges. This type of Hillfort is known as a
promontory fort because it uses a natural spur of land
with steep sides with a short line of man made earthworks
across the neck to create a defensive enclosure. |
